Portsmouth Square construction updates

The park above us, Portsmouth Square, is being rebuilt between 2026 and 2028. The good news for drivers: the garage stays open through the work, and no further closures are planned. This page is where we post the latest.

August 2026

Two weekend closures for bridge demolition

The garage was closed the weekends of August 1–2 and August 8–9, 2026 while the pedestrian bridge over Kearny Street was removed. It has since reopened on its normal schedule.

June 2026

Groundbreaking on the park renovation

Portsmouth Square, the park directly above the garage, broke ground on June 9, 2026, at a community press conference, and construction began the next day. The garage remains open throughout the roughly two-year renovation and continues to serve the neighborhood.

About the project

A new Portsmouth Square

The Portsmouth Square Improvement Project is a $73 million renovation of the 1.3-acre park above the garage, led by the City of San Francisco.

A rebuilt park

New landscaping, a flexible event space, a consolidated playground and fitness area, and a new community clubhouse with meeting rooms and a kitchen.

Bridge removal

The 240-foot pedestrian bridge over Kearny Street is coming down, opening up the street and the square below.

Accessible & cultural

New ADA-accessible pathways and ramps, public art, and interpretive signage celebrating Chinatown’s history.

Construction runs through 2028. Throughout it, the garage is your steady way into Chinatown.

Meet the project team on the second Friday of each month at 10am, at Walter U. Lum Place and Washington Street. Chinese interpretation available.

Weekend alternative

When we close for demolition weekends, St. Mary’s Square Garage at 433 Kearny Street is a short walk away.
